Telecare Alarms - They're not just for the elderly

Published: Thursday, 18 January 2024

Nottingham on Call provide an excellent service which features the provision of assistive technology equipment and a 24/7 monitoring and response service.  The Service is well liked by our customers and relatives judging by the compliments we receive. Take a look at some of the compliments.

There can be a perception that a care alarm / pendant service like Nottingham on Call is largely for the elderly and frail. However, our customers can be of all ages.  It is true that about half of new customers in 2023 were 80 years old or older, and if you include those over 65 this becomes 80% of new customers. However, this does mean that a fifth of our new customers in 2023 were under 65 so it not just a service for the elderly.  That’s about 350 people, out of the 1700 people who were provided with a service in 2023.

The following are some examples of customers we have provided a service for in 2023.

Example 1

A woman aged 48 who has heart failure, gets very breathless and has a high risk of falls. She had a care alarm installed so she could summon help if she needed it, and a keysafe so that access could be provided to emergency services, for example if she had fallen and not able to get up.

Example 2

A woman aged 34 who has seizures, has a slipped disc in her back and high levels of anxiety, but wanted the confidence to be able to go out and about independently. She had the GO! mobile care alarm which can be worn where ever you go, meaning she could press the button to summon help if needed, or if she had a seizure and fell to the ground the inbuilt falls detector would trigger and our staff would know the location to send an ambulance.

Example 3

A man aged 27 who has PTSD, anxiety and was mentally unwell meaning he would be very reluctant to open his front door. A keysafe was installed with the number secured at the call centre, meaning key professionals could gain access for important appointments, as well as emergency services if needed.

Example 4

A child aged 5 who has Cerebral Palsy, and at risk of leaving their bed and being unsafe without supervision.  A bed sensor was installed with a link to a pager so that the parents were alerted when the child was out of the bed so they could attend.

Telecare alarms are not only for elderly and frail people.
