Prevent falling outside the home

How can I prevent falling outside the home? This is a question asked by many elderly people. Here at Nottingham On Call we want to help you overcome this problem.

You may have hand rails by your bath and slip resistant rugs in your house. You perhaps have no wires trailing in your home so there is nothing to cause a fall. But what do you do when you leave your home?

Every year one in three senior citizens suffer a fall and that is more than eleven million people. There are some easy steps you can take to help prevent falling outside the home.

Tips to prevent falling outside the home

Choosing the right shoes when leaving the house is really important because high heels and thick soles won’t give you the stability you need. Instead go for a thin sole with good grip and ideally lace ups rather than slip ons.

Try to factor in more time to get to places as the more you rush, the more likely you are to fall. Stay at a pace that is comfortable and safe for you.

When you are out and about, always stay fully alert and aware of your surroundings. Highly polished floors can be extremely slippery and may cause a fall. Keep your hands free at all times and keep your gaze forward. This is also going to help you be aware of anything that may get in your way. A raised bit of pavement or a cyclist going too fast is all it takes to cause a fall.

The Nottingham On Call GO! is specifically designed to help. The GO! can be worn where ever you go. If you just nip to the shops, or go and meet friends for a coffee, the GO! will always be with you. Designed to be worn around the neck, all you do is press the button and you'll be immediately connected with our call centre.
