It's National Upcycling Day

Today is National Upcycling Day, a brilliant reminder that old doesn’t mean useless—and that a little creativity can go a long way in reducing waste, saving money, and giving a fresh lease of life to everyday items.

At Nottingham on Call, we’re always focused on making life easier, safer, and more sustainable for our customers. Whether it’s through technology that supports independent living or smart ideas that help make a house feel more like home, we believe in getting the most out of what you already have—and upcycling fits that mindset perfectly.

Upcycling is the process of taking something that might otherwise be thrown away and turning it into something new and useful. It’s not just about recycling—it’s about adding value. You don’t need to be an expert crafter or have a shed full of tools. Sometimes it’s as simple as repurposing, repainting, or rethinking how you use something.

We’re all becoming more aware of the impact of waste on our planet. Every time we throw something away, it adds to landfill, and often, the materials we discard still have plenty of life left in them.

For many of our customers, upcycling is also about keeping costs down, staying resourceful, and making the home feel more personal. Plus, it’s a satisfying hobby—one that can keep your mind and hands busy, especially for those who enjoy DIY or crafting.

Here are a few simple upcycling ideas that you or a loved one could try, many of which work well in a home that’s focused on safety and comfort:

  • Old mugs as plant pots: Cracked or mismatched mugs can be perfect for small indoor plants like succulents or herbs. Pop one on a sunny windowsill for a splash of greenery.

  • Ladders as shelving: A wooden step-ladder, cleaned up and painted, can make a charming shelf for books, photographs, or ornaments.

  • T-shirts into bags or rags: Got an old T-shirt you love but no longer wear? With a few simple cuts and knots, you can turn it into a handy reusable shopping bag, or just cut up and use as rags.

  • Jam jars as organisers: Old jam jars are perfect for storing buttons, screws, or even tea bags. Label them and line them up for a neat and accessible look.

  • Furniture refresh: Instead of throwing away a tired-looking side table, try giving it a fresh coat of paint or new handles. You might be surprised by how different it looks with a bit of attention.

If you or someone you care for is decluttering, moving to a smaller space, or just looking to refresh the home, upcycling can be a great way to hold on to treasured items while adapting them to suit new needs. It’s also a mindful, positive way to make small changes that add up to a bigger impact.
