Case study: Tailoring our service to meet your needs
Published: Monday, 8 September 2025
One of the many ways that Nottingham on Call is different to other care alarm providers is that we understand that not everyone is the same and we’ll always work with our customers to make sure the support we’re providing is the most suitable for your individual needs.
This dedication to providing the right type of assistance was demonstrated recently when we received a referral from the NHS for a care alarm to be installed at the home of an older lady living with multiple long-term conditions, including Parkinson’s Disease and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Although the lady lived at home with the support of her daughter, her daughter works full-time – so her availability to look after her mum during working hours is limited.
Recently her Parkinson’s symptoms have begun to affect her memory, and she’s undergoing assessment for Parkinson’s-related dementia. A smoker, with a high-risk of falls – the daughter was in real need of finding a solution to help keep her mum as safe as possible when out at work.
What we did…
Upon receiving the referral, our experienced team were able to review her social care records. This confirmed that the lady had a care plan in place and was eligible for Nottingham on Call services as a funded customer.
The next step was to have a telephone discussion with the daughter to fully understand her mum’s circumstances.
That extra time spent on the phone was invaluable in being able to decide on suitable options that could support her mum. It helped to highlight several risks that we could support with, including:
- Falls risk – due to Parkinson’s and mobility issues.
- Fire risks – linked to smoking.
- Memory impairment – affecting here mum’s ability to reliably use a standard care alarm that required manual activation.
Following the conversation, it became clear that the original referral for a care alarm alone would not adequately meet her mum’s wider needs and an enhanced package of telecare equipment was agreed, including:
Once agreed, the installation was arranged at a time when her daughter could attend around her work commitments.
It would have been easy for us to have just installed the care alarm as requested from the original referral. But that alone would not have addressed the customer’s needs.
The use of automatic detection (for falls, smoke, and carbon monoxide) meant that the customer did not need to rely on remembering to activate an alarm if in need – providing her and her daughter with greater safety and reassurance.
This example demonstrates the importance we place on thorough triage and the involvement of everybody in care planning.
By going beyond the initial referral for a care alarm, Nottingham on Call was able to deliver a tailored solution that met the customer’s wider needs, promoting safety, independence, and peace of mind for both mother and daughter.
