Tackling Loneliness in older people.

Published: Thursday, 13 July 2023

Loneliness at any age can feel uncomfortable, difficult to talk about and hard to acknowledge but as we get older it can become even harder and more common.

Before the Covid pandemic around 1.4 million people in the UK were often lonely. Following the pandemic it is reported that 27% of people aged 60+ say they feel lonelier than ever and speak less to family and friends now compared to before the pandemic.

The impact of online communication such as Zoom and social media has further isolated the older community and so loneliness is even more common.

We understand that they are many of our customers who can sometimes feel lonely and we believe no older person should feel lonely.

To alleviate loneliness, connection is important and we want to tell you about an organisation called The Silver Line.

The Silver Line offer friendship, conversation and support to older people who need it. They are a 24 hour free service who have a team at the end of the phone whenever you need them.

Whether it is just a quick “good morning” or you want a caring ear to listen to your feelings or concerns, The Silver Line are always there.

Whenever feelings of isolation, worry or loneliness arrive, all you need to do is pick up the phone and call The Silver Line for free on 0800 4 70 80 90.
