Let's talk about Extra Care

Did you know the new age of care is extra care?

Nottingham City Council and Nottingham Housing Services are leading the charge.

They have created the new Winwood Heights complex on the site of Winchester and Woodthorpe Courts, next to Woodthorpe Park in Sherwood. The two current tower blocks are already independent living schemes, housing older or more vulnerable residents. Each block has now been refurbished and connected by a brand-new extra care facility.

What is extra care?

Extra Care housing is often described as ‘very sheltered housing’, ‘assisted living’ or ‘housing with care’. It can be used in blocks of flats, bungalow estates and retirement villages. It is a popular choice among older people because it can sometimes provide an alternative to a care home.

Have you seen Winwood Heights in Sherwood, Nottingham?

Wow. What a place!

The £11m redevelopment has now been unveiled. They have rendered the existing blocks, fitted new windows and balconies and carried out any necessary maintenance and improvement works.

While this work was underway, the builders Wilmott Dixon, began work creating the brand-new building that would connect the towers. This is the extra care facility. See here how the building came together.

What does the facility include?

The designers wanted to create a retirement village setting. Overall the site includes 223 apartments for older people, spread across the three building. The 44-one bedroom extra care centre will help those people who want to live independently, but do have extra needs. It helps people to live in their communities for longer.

There will be care staff on-site 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each of the flats is also connected to Nottingham on Call. There is also a lift, lounge, laundry, communal garden and activities room, a hairdressing salon and assisted bathing facilities.

You will see from the pictures below that it looks great, it’s such a lovely environment, looks modern and contemporary. It still however has many decorative nods to the ‘good old days’.

We have made sure the Nottingham on Call service is available to all residents. This can further help people to stay independent. We also offer our customers a wide range of equipment, which has been designed to help them live independently.

Working together as an overall service, we are working together in Nottingham to enhance the lives of older people through extra care, support and personal care alarm monitoring.
