Are you eating well as you age?

Why is eating well important for a healthy later life?

As we age our needs from food change. It’s important you try to eat well as you move in to later life to stay feeling at your best.

As we get older we also often lose our appetite and this can lead to not eating enough and not getting enough nutritional foods.

So what does healthy eating look like in your golden years?

We have probably all seen this image of a plate of food divided up into food groups showing us the ideal portion sizes to be eating well. This is a good guide but it is important that as you get older, you are eating enough calories to give you the energy required to feel well.

So although it is important to get a balance of things like protein, fats, carbohydrates and dairy, a good idea is to plan each meal around a carbohydrate such as potato, pasta or rice to ensure you are getting the energy you need.

However, it is important to remember to have a flexible approach to the Eatwell plate. Every older person has their preferences about what they want to eat and individual freedom and choice are key to reshaping the Eat Well plate to suit their personal needs and preferred foods.

You want to also try to ensure you are including a variety of fruit and vegetables each day to get a good source of vitamins and minerals. Fruit and veg along with things like whole grains will help maintain good gut health and digestion as well as a healthy heart.

It is important that you are enjoying what you are eating and so try to add flavour to foods using herbs and spices so that eating is enjoyable and a treat for your tastebuds!

Sweet treats are great and should be thoroughly enjoyed in moderation. Why not try making some of your favourite bakes. Baking can be a great activity and can be really relaxing. It can also be rewarding to eat and share what you have made with friends and family.

Remember, eating healthily doesn’t have to be boring, it is about using your imagination to create well balanced meals that you will enjoy digging in to!!
