Deaf Awareness Week - 4 to 10 May

Published: Wednesday, 29 April 2026

More than 18 million adults in the UK are deaf or have hearing loss.

Deaf Awareness Week is an annual event raising awareness about deafness and celebrating British deaf culture, community, and history.

It’s a time to celebrate Deaf identity, promote Deaf culture, and advocate for equal access to communication and services for the Deaf and hard of hearing.

This week-long event provides an opportunity for individuals and organisations to come together and support the Deaf community, learn about their experiences, and work towards a more inclusive and accessible society.

How Nottingham on Call can help

At Nottingham on Call we have stand-alone equipment, that’s not linked to our call centre, that can help you at home if you’re deaf or have hearing loss.

Flashing Strobe

Used alongside a vibrating pillow alert that comes with the strobe, this is especially useful if you’re deaf or hard of hearing.

If it detects an alarm or smoke detector has been activated in your home, it will set off a strobe light to alert you and a mini pad that you place under your pillow should you be asleep will vibrate. Find out more about the flashing strobe here: Flashing Strobe

Linked Pagers

We also have a range of sensors that link to localised pagers. These include bed and chair sensors and fall detectors. These vibrate as well as make sound – so even if a family member who is caring for the customer is hard of hearing, the vibration of the pager will alert them to an issue.

Alternative offers of support

As well as equipment like this, we’ll always look to offer alternative options of support if you’re deaf.

For example, if you have one of our linked smoke detectors in your home, our call centre is alerted if it activates so that we can take the appropriate action.

If you’re deaf or hard of hearing that would include sending you a message by text, rather than trying to contact you through a care alarm, as well as contacting the fire service directly if no immediate response is received.

Or if you have some level of hearing, we’re able to increase the sound levels of our care alarms so that you know that we’re trying to make contact.

Get in touch

To find out more about the equipment we can offer you to live independently in your home, no matter your circumstances, get in touch today by completing our short online contact form and a member of the team will be in touch.
